My Review

Clint Eastwood made his directorial debut in a big way in the psychological thriller “Play Misty for Me.” Eastwood’s taut direction resulted in very few wasted scenes and a fast-moving 102 minute running time. He played the male lead, a radio disc jockey stalked by a crazed female fan.

The supporting cast has some great talent. Jessica Walter is just plain scary as Eastwood’s stalker. Donna Mills, who later became famous as villain Abby Ewing on CBS-TV’s “Knots Landing” in the 1980’s, plays the sweet and loyal girlfriend of Clint here. These are early career roles for both women.

Co-stars include John Larch, Clarice Tayler, Irene Hervey, Jack Ging, James McEachin, and Don Siegel. The excellent screenplay by Jo Heims and Dean Riesner helped to make the watchable rollercoaster ride “Play Misty for Me” a big hit in theatrical release for Malpaso Productions and Universal Pictures.
