Clint Eastwood plays a wounded Union soldier who takes shelter in in a girl’s school in Mississippi during the Civil War, and soon becomes embroiled in the dysfunctional female-dominated environment there. Director Don Siegel (“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” 1956) put together a well-organized film with greater heights of suspense and even terror as the film progresses. The excellent screenplay was written by Albert Maltz, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Thomas P. Cullinan.
The supporting cast with Clint includes Geraldine Page, Darlene Carr, Elizabeth Hartman, Jo Ann Harris, Mae Mercer, Pamelyn Ferdin, Melody Thomas. The musical score by Lalo Schifrin helped to heighten the tension and drama of “The Beguiled,” a flop at the box office for producer Don Siegel, The Malpaso Company, and Universal Pictures. Underperformance of this motion picture with the public is probably due to Eastwood “playing against type.”
