My Review

Steve McQueen stars as a veteran rodeo circuit rider who reunites with his estranged parents and brother in “Junior Bonner.” Director Sam Peckinpah (“Major Dundee” 1965) weaved together this excellent contemporary western with extensive character development and marvelous performances by the cast. Peckinpah had great material to work with in the screenplay by Jeb Rosebrook.

Veteran movie stars Ida Lupino and Robert Preston were simply outstanding as McQueen’s mom and dad. McQueen, Lupino, and Preston have incomparable movie chemistry here. Co-stars include Joe Don Baker, Ben Johnson, Dub Taylor, Barbara Leigh, Mary Murphy, Bill McKinney, Don “Red” Barry, and Charles H. Gray. The very watchable “Junior Bonner” did not make money at the box office for ABC Pictures, Joe Wizan-Booth Gardner Productions, Solar Productions, Cinerama Releasing Corporation, and 20th Century Fox.
