My Review
“The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” is an off-beat western comedy film loosely based on the real-life Roy Bean (1825-1903), a Justice of the Peace/saloon keeper. The boring story and poorly written script reflect the declining career of director John Huston (“The Maltese Falcon” 1941), helped out by screenwriter John Milius.
Paul Newman heads the stellar cast in the title role, taking a detour in his otherwise successful career, making this picture in between “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969) and “The Sting” (1973). Other cast members include Jacqueline Bisset, Anthony Perkins, Roddy McDowell, Ned Beatty, Tab Hunter, Richard Farnsworth, Stacy Keach, Michael Sarrazin, Anthony Zerbe, Bill McKinney, Jack Colvin, John Huston as Grizzly Adams, and Ava Gardner as Lilly Langtry.
Victoria Principal and Steve Kanaly made their motion picture debuts in this film. They would be reunited five years later in the hit television series “Dallas” which ran for thirteen seasons on CBS. These two and the all-star cast are the only factors that make this mediocre product “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” a watchable film.
It was a modest hit at the box office for producer John Foreman (‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” 1969), National General Pictures, and First Artists, a production company owned by Newman, Barbra Streisand, Sidney Poitier, Steve McQueen, and Dustin Hoffman, which was sold to Warner Bros. Pictures in 1980.
