“The Way We Were” is the story of a couple whose opposite backgrounds and political beliefs get in the way of their relationship. This love story, set from the 1930’s to the 1950’s, was skillfully crafted by director Sydney Pollack (“Jeremiah Johnson” 1972) from the screenplay by Arthur Laurents, adapted from his own 1972 novel of the same name.
Barbara Streisand and Robert Redford are the stars of the show, with Pollack capturing both in their prime and somehow managing to get outstanding performances from both. The pair’s chemistry carries the picture from start to finish. Co-stars include Bradford Dilman, Lois Chiles, Patrick O’Neal, Murray Hamilton, Herb Edelman, Sally Kirkland, James Woods, Susan Blakely, Viveca Lindfors, Allyn Ann McLerie, George Gaynes, and Diana Ewing.
