My Review

“The Neptune Factor” is a science fiction action movie about an underwater research laboratory that has fallen into a deep trench as the result of an earthquake. A rescue team aboard a submarine is sent down to rescue the crew, but runs into unexpected trouble from gigantic sea creatures. Director Daniel Petrie (“A Raisin in the Sun” 1961) and screenwriter Jack DeWitt have put together a predictable movie that does have respectable production values.

The cast delivers acceptable performances including Ben Gazzara, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, and Walter Pidgeon. The real star of the show, however, is the underwater photography by Paul Herberman. The unusual fish and miniatures at the bottom of the ocean really steal the show. Also contributing is cinematographer Harry Makin.

The great musical score by Lalo Schifrin perfectly sets the mood for this 20th Century Fox product, a big flop at the box office. Though not a top-rate film, “The Neptune Factor” does provide watchable escapist entertainment.
