My Review

Lynn Redgrave carries the day as Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw’s play “Pygmalion,” aired on December 16, 1973, as a BBC Play of the Month. Director Cedric Messina used Shaw’s original material verbatim with fantastic results. The two hour production moved rapidly.

The ensemble effort includes James Villers as Professor Henry Higgins, Ronald Fraser as Col. Pickering, Emrys James as the elder Doolittle, Lally Bowers as Mrs. Higgins, and the very familiar Angela Baddeley (Mrs. Bridges of “Upstairs, Downstairs”) as Mrs. Pearce. Nicholas Jones, Joyce Grant, Joanna McCallum, and Noel Trevarthen also star.

There have been numerous versions of “Pygmalion” and “My Fair Lady.” This very watchable rendition on DVD is well worth searching out.
