My Review

“The Affair” is a romantic drama film that tells the story of a disabled young woman, a songwriter, who becomes involved with an older man who is an attorney. They face opposition from her family, and the complicated drama proceeds from there. Director Gilbert Cates put together this made-for-television movie that has inconsistencies in the storyline, mediocre performances by the actors, and poor production values. The teleplay by Barbara Turner is deeply flawed and just downright boring.

Movie legends Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, married in real life, head the cast as the star crossed lovers. They look terrible in this project. The Wagner’s previously worked together in “All the Fine Young Cannibals,” a 1960 theatrically released movie that was also not well received by critics or at the box office. Co-stars include Bruce Davison, Pat Harrington Jr., Kent Smith, Jamie Smith-Jackson, Frances Reed, and Mark Roberts.

“The Affair” was broadcast on the ABC television network on November 20, 1973, from producer Aaron Spelling and Spelling-Goldberg Productions.
