“Chinatown” is a complex film noir mystery film that tells the story of a Los Angeles private investigator who is hired by a woman to investigate her husband’s private activities. He soon finds out that the woman is an imposter, the man is murdered, and is the head of the L. A. Department of Water and Power who is involved in all kinds of intrigue. The heavy drama proceeds from there, with not a dull moment in the two hour-plus running time thanks to expert direction by Roman Polanski (“Rosemary’s Baby” 1968) and an outstanding screenplay written by Robert Towne.
The film stars Jack Nicholson in the lead role, one of his best ever. Co-stars include Faye Dunaway, John Hillerman, Perry Lopez, Burt Young, John Huston, James Hong, Jerry Fujikawa, Diane Ladd, Rance Howard, Burt Young, Bruce Glover, and Roy Roberts as Mayor Bagby of Los Angeles. The very watchable “Chinatown” was a big hit at the box office for producer Robert Evans, Robert Evans Company, Long Road Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
