My Review

“Oblivion” is a weak entry into the 2013 science fiction movie field, overshadowed by such outstanding blockbusters as “Iron Man 3” and “Star Trek: Into the Darkness.” Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper, billed as the one of the last people on earth.

This film has good production values, including great special effects. The cinematography is superb, with Claudiio Miranda taking full advantage of location shoots in Iceland. Visually, “Oblivion” is very satisfying, but the plot is extremely thin; we have seen other versions of this movie before.

The screenplay by Karl Gujdusek and Michael deBruyn was based on director Joseph Kosinski’s unpublished novel of the same name. Kosinski previously directed “Tron: Legacy” (2010) for Disney. The supporting cast behind Tom Cruise includes Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Melissa Leo, and Zoe Bell. The borderline watchable “Oblivion” was a success at the box office for Joseph Kosinski and Universal Pictures.
