My Review

“Shampoo” is the story of a Beverly Hills hairdresser whose lascivious lifestyle begins to interfere with his business activities. Director Hal Ashby (“The Landlord” 1970) and screenwriters Robert Towne and Warren Beatty put together a quite a slick, fast-moving production with some good performances by big name stars.

The cast includes Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, Goldie Hawn, Lee Grant, Jack Warden, Tony Bill, Jay Robinson, George Furth, Susanna Moore, Kathleen Miller, Luana Anders, Mike Olton, Brad Dexter, William Castle, Howard Hessman, Michelle Phillips, Susan Blakely, Cynthia Wood, and Carrie Fisher in her motion picture debut, only two years before her launch into superstardom in “Star Wars” (1977).

The watchable “Shampoo” was a huge hit at the box office for producer Warren Beatty, Rubeeker Films, and Columbia Pictures. It won one Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (Grant), and nominated for three others: Best Supporting Actor (Warden), Best Original Screenplay (Towne & Beatty), and Best Art Direction.
