“The Day of the Locust” is a fascinating 1970’s take on 1930’s Hollywood. Director John Schlesinger (“The Falcon and the Snowman” 1985) put together this film adaptation of Nathanael West’s 1939 novel of the same name, with some great performances by Donald Sutherland and Burgess Meredith, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a retired vaudeville star. (The other Academy Award nod was for Best Cinematography to Conrad L. Hall.)
The complex screenplay with numerous Tinsel Town goings-on was penned by Waldo Salt, providing excellent material for the actors to work with, in this 144 minute movie. The supporting cast includes Karen Black, William Atherton, Richard Dysart, John Hillerman, Geraldine Page, Bo Hopkins, Billy Barty, Jack Earle Haley, Natalie Schafer, Nita Talbot, Gloria LeRoy, Paul Jabara, Lelia Goldoni, Pepe Serna, Norman Levitt, Madge Kennedy, Paul Stewart, Gloria Strook, and William Castle as The Director.
The very interesting and very watchable movie “The Day of the Locust” was a box office flop for Long Road Productions and Paramount Pictures.
