My Review

The Best Picture of 1975 is…..”One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” This psychological drama appears to have everything: Great writing, outstanding performances, superior production values, and more. It tells the story of a criminal who manages to be transferred from a prison farm to a mental hospital, thinking he will avoid hard labor. He soon discovers that the nurse in charge of the hospital is very dictatorial and the two begin engaging in a battle of wills. The riveting drama proceeds from there.

Director Milos Forman put together this engrossing motion picture from a well-written screenplay by Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman, adapted from the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey. It is one of the few films in history to win the “Big Five” Academy Award wins: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress. (The two others being “It Happened One Night” 1934 and “The Silence of the Lambs” 1991.)

The excellent cast is headed by Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, who won the two Oscars, in their legendary roles as R. P. McMurphy and Nurse Mildred Ratched. These performances were at the heart of the movie drama. Co-stars include Scatman Crothers, Danny DeVito, Will Sampson, William Redfield, Brad Dourif, Vincent Schiavelli, Michael Berryman, Sydney Lassick, and Christopher Lloyd in his motion picture debut. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” was a big hit at the box office for producers Saul Zaentz and Michael Douglas, Fantasy Films, and United Artists.
