My Review

“The Ox-Bow Incident” is a western drama about three men who are blamed for the murder of a local rancher. A group of residents of the town have formed a posse determined to have the men punished for the crime on the spot, without a trial. Director William A. Wellman (“Wings” 1927) has created quite a dramatic morality play about the dangers of vigilantism, from a well written screenplay by Lamar Trotti. adapted from the 1940 western novel of the same name by Walter Van Tilberg Clark.

The cast turned out good performances, including Henry Fonda, Dana Andrews, Harry Morgan, Anthony Quinn, Jane Darwell, Frank Conroy, Harry Davenport, Francis Ford, William Eythe, and Mary Beth Hughes. “The Ox-Bow Incident” was only a modest success at the box office for producer Lamar Trotti and 20th Century Fox, but was a nominee for the Best Picture Oscar, losing out to “Casabanca” starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.

Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell co-starred together in a total of six films: “Jesse James” (1939), “The Grapes of Wrath” (1940), “Chad Hanna” (1940), “The Battle of Midway” (1942), “The Ox-Bow Incident” (1943), and “My Darling Clementine” (1946).
