My Review

The always pretentious and self-absorbed Barbra Streisand starred in the third version of “A Star is Born.” This overly-melodramatic film, directed and co-written by Frank Pierson, mostly at the helm of television projects, bores viewers to death with its pomposity and bad acting.

The two major stars, Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, both have a narrow performance range, so their poor offerings should come as no surprise. Other cast members include such duds as Gary Busey, Paul Mazursky, Joanne Linville, and Sally Kirkland. Rita Coolidge and Tony Orlando appear in cameos as themselves.

One bright spot for the film is the music by Streisand. “Evergreen” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, penned by Streisand and Paul Williams. “A Star is Born” was successful at the box office for producer Jon Peters, First Artists, Barwood Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is a remake of the 1937 original starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March and the 1954 version with Judy Garland. A fourth version came out in 2018 featuring Lady Gaga.
