“Burnt Offerings” is a horror film about a house trying to take possession of its summer vacation renters. Though the formulaic storyline make the movie somewhat predictable, the plot moves along smoothly with good performances by big name stars. It is easy to watch due to the absence of violence and gore which are prevalent in many horror films.
Producer-director Dan Curtis, creator of the ABC daytime drama “Dark Shadows” (1966-1971), also co-wrote the screenplay with William F. Nolan. He hired an outstanding cast which includes Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Burgess Meredith, Eileen Heckart, Lee H. Montgomery, Dub Taylor, Bette Davis, and Anthony James as the smiling hearse driver.
Despite the good production values, “Burnt Offerings” does have occult themes that many object to, and can indeed be dangerous. It was a failure in general theatrical release for Produzioni Europee Associati (PEA of Italy), Dan Curtis Production, and United Artists.
