My Review

Broadway director Harold Prince enjoyed great success on the Great White Way for years, earning a record 21 Tony Awards. However, this run did not extend to motion pictures as his film “A Little Night Music” was a stinker on the big screen. Screenwriter Hugh Wheeler did a terrible job in this adaptation of his own Broadway play, which is a musical romantic comedy about the lives of several married couples.

Stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Rigg, Len Cariou, Lesley-Ann Down, and Hermione Gingold did a terrible job not only in their acting craft, but also in performing the songs written by Stephen Sondheim. The opening number featuring the entire cast is laughable, especially the scenes with Taylor. Her weight seemed to fluctuate from scene to scene. Apparently there were gaps and lags in the filming schedule.

“A Little Night Music” was a flop at the box office for S&T Film Berlin, Sascha-Verleih, and New World Pictures. It had one Oscar win for Best Music, Original Song Score.
