My Review

“Pete’s Dragon” is Walt Disney’s story of a boy named Pete and his pet dragon. The cast is of this musical fantasy movie is live-action except for the title character, the animated dragon named Elliot, Pete’s friend and protector.

Director Don Chaffey (“The Fourth Wish” 1976) and screenwriter Malcolm Marmorstein did an excellent job with this Disney family film, keeping the mood light and breezy. Producers Jerome Courtland and Ron W. Miller (Walt Disney’s son-in-law) made sure of that.

The performers are top rate, especially Sean Marshall as the orphan boy Pete and Charlie Callas as the voice of Elliot. Co-stars include Mickey Rooney, Helen Reddy, Red Buttons, Jeff Conaway, Shelley Winters, Jane Kean, Jim Backus, Walter Barnes, Jim Dale, Charles Tyner, Gary Morgan, and Cal Bartlett.

The winsome and watchable “Pete’s Dragon” was very successful at the box office for Walt Disney Productions and Buena Vista Distribution. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Original Song (“Candle on the Water”) and Best Original Score. A remake was released in 2016 by Walt Disney Pictures.
