“Bobby Deerfield” is a romantic drama film where Al Pacino plays a famous American race car driver who falls in love with a terminally ill Swiss woman. Producer-director Sydney Pollack (“Three Days of the Condor” 1975) kept an even keel at the helm of this movie, basically an Al Pacino vehicle, which moved smoothly for a quick two hours, from a well written screenplay by Alvin Sergant. It was adapted from the 1961 novel “Heaven Has No Favorites” by Erich Maria Remarque.
The star of the show is Al Pacino, who delivered a marvelous performance in the title role. He had great chemistry with Marthe Keller as the leading lady. Their melodrama dominated most of the film, leaving some room for co-stars including Ann Duperey, Walter McGinn, and Romolo Valli. “Bobby Deerfield” was only modestly successful at the box office for First Artists and Columbia Pictures.
