My Review

“Sucker Punch” is a psychological fantasy action movie that tells the story of a young woman who is committed to a mental institution. As she plans an escape, she slips in and out of fantasy worlds where she and her well coiffed female fellow inmates become strong warriors. Director Zach Snyder (“Dawn of the Dead” 2004), who co-wrote the screenplay with Steve Shibuya, seems to slip in and out of fantasy worlds himself in the production of this film, as the plot zigzags all around and is difficult to follow.

The movie does have loads of action and outstanding special effects to keep viewers occupied, but the performances by cast members leaves something to be desired. This includes weak performances from Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn, Partick Sabongui, Gerard Plunkett, and Malcolm Scott as The Cook.

The difficult to watch “Sucker Punch” broke even at the box office for producers Zach Snyder and Deborah Snyder, Cruel and Unusual Films, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
