My Review

The Best Picture of 1977 is…..”Annie Hall.” This story of a comedian’s relationship with his girl friend is really just a collection of Woody Allen’s jokes from his stand-up comedy acts. The film has a feel of a project sloppily thrown together, due to slipshod direction by Allen and and a mediocre screenplay by Allen and Marshall Brickman.

The supporting cast behind Woody Allen includes Diane Keaton, Tony Roberts, Carol Kane, Paul Simon, Janet Margolin, Shelley Duvall, Christopher Walken, Colleen Dewhurst, Donald Symington, Tracey Walter, and Mordecai Lawner. There are cameo appearances by Jeff Goldblum, Beverly D’Angelo, Truman Capote, John Glover, and Sigourney Weaver in her film debut.

The mildly entertaining “Annie Hall” was a modest success in general release for United Artists. It won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Keaton), and Best Original Screenplay. Many had expected “Star Wars” to take at least a few of the top honors, considering its well-polished complexity, creativity, and special effects, as well as being the top-grossing picture of the year at the box office. “Star Wars” did win six Oscars, sweeping the technical categories: Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
