My Review

“The Favourite” is a black comedy set in 1705 in England telling the story of two young women vying to be the “court favourite” of Queen Anne. Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Lobster” 2015) gave the movie some laughs mixed with deep sarcasm, typical of a black comedy, from the screenplay written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara. Viewers enjoyment of the film will depend upon their appreciation of this type of humor.

The movie was filled with good production values, authentic period costumes, great cinematography by Robbie Ryan filmed in Hatfield House in Hatfield, England, and wonderful performances by the cast. Olivia Colman played Queen Anne, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, one of nine nominations. Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz played the two women, inspired by real life persons Abigail Hill Masham and Lady Sarah Churchill, an ancestor of Winston Churchill (UK Prime Minister) and Diana Spencer (Princess of Wales).

Co-stars include Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, James Smith, Mark Gatiss, Jenny Rainsford, Jennifer White, and Lily-Rose Stevens. “The Favourite” was successful in theatrical release for Scarlett Films, Element Pictures, Arcana, Film4 Productions, Waypoint Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
