Our seven old friends experience a “Rescue from Gilligan’s Island” in a made-for-television movie that aired on NBC in October, 1978. Returning cast members include Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr. as the Skipper, Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III, Natalie Schafer as Lovey Howell, Russell Johnson as the Professor, and Dawn Wells as Mary Ann. Judith Baldwin replaced Tina Louise as Ginger.
“Rescue” retains much of the flavor of the original series, which was on CBS from 1964-1967. Thanks goes to series creator Sherwood Schwarz, who was in charge of this project as executive producer. He co-wrote the teleplay with Elroy Schwartz, Al Schwarz, and David Harmon. The director was Leslie H. Martinson.
The supporting cast includes Vincent Schiavelli, Art LaFleur, Michael MacReady, Martin Rudy, Mel Prestidge, June Whitley Taylor, Don Marshall, and Lewis Arquette as the Judge. Two other sequels followed this 1978 “Rescue from Gilligan’s Island” – “The Castaways on Gilligan’s Island” (1979) and “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island” (1981).
