“Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” is a parody of low-budget science fiction movies, depicting large tomatoes going on a rampage, splattering innocent human victims, causing their death. Producer-director John DeBello, of course, made this film on a very low budget with terrible production values. It cost about $100,000 to make, and took in over a half a million dollars in general release. The movie remains a cult classic to this day, with sequels released in 1988, 1990, and 1991.
Most of the cast were unknown actors, except for Stephen Peace, Eric Christmas, and Jack Riley. Steve Peace, who co-wrote the screenplay with John DeBello and Costa Dillon, served in the California Assembly and state Senate for a time (1982-2002). Eric Christmas was a British actor who appeared in numerous television programs and films, including “The Andromeda Strain” (1971). Jack Riley is remembered mostly for his role as Elliot Carlin on CBS-TV’s “The Bob Newhart Show” (1972-1978).
