My Review

In the wake of the massive success of “Star Wars” from 20th Century Fox in 1977, Walt Disney Pictures responded with “The Black Hole.” However, this science fiction story of an American space mission discovering a black hole falls short in the story department, with a lack of inspiring tale to tell and little action or adventure.

The fault lies with Gary Nelson’s detached direction and Gerry Day’s and Jeb Rosebrook’s flat screenplay. The buck stops with producer Ron Miller, Walt Disney’s son-in-law, and head of the studio. There is nothing wrong with the FX (special effects) as the film was nominated for two Academy Awards here: Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography.

The stars of the show include Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Joseph Bottoms, Yvette Mimieux, Ernest Borgnine, and Tom McLoughlin. Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens have uncredited roles as voices of the robots. All performers seemed they were doing their best to avoid being pulled into “The Black Hole,” a modest success at the box office for Walt Disney Pictures and Buena Vista Distribution. This was Disney’s first movie to be given a PG rating.
