My Review

Movie-making is at it worst in “C.H.O.M.P.S.,” the story of a young inventor who creates a robotic dog to be used for home protection. Director Don Chaffey (“One Million Years B. C.” 1966) and producer Joseph Barbera may have been trying to make a cute dog picture, but the asinine screenplay by Duane Poole, Dick Robbins, and Barbera made that goal impossible to achieve. Chaffey failed to execute a decent film on any level, with bad writing, terrible production values, and mediocre performances by some of Hollywood’s top names that should know better.

The cast includes Wesley Eure, Valerie Bertinelli, Conrad Bain, Red Buttons, Jim Backus, Chuck McCann, James Reynolds, and Hermione Baddeley as Mrs. Flower. This is one of Baddeley’s final film roles in a career that started in 1927. This unwatchable film was a flop at the box for producer Joseph Barbera, Hanna-Barbera Productions, and American International Pictures. In case you are wondering, the meaning of “C.H.O.M.P.S.” is Canine HOMe Protection System.
