“Hopscotch” is a comedy spy film where Walter Matthau plays a spy who get in trouble with the CIA and decides to leave his job, and write a book exposing the agency’s inner workings. Director Ronald Neame (“The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” 1969) and screenwriters Bryan Forbes and Brian Garfield put together a film that is horribly boring, badly written, and has terrible acting.
Annoying performances abound throughout the movie, especially the two principals, Matthau and Ned Beatty. It has no real protagonists. Co-stars include Glenda Jackson, Sam Waterston, Herbert Lom, George Baker, Ivor Roberts, Lucy Saroyan, Anne Haney, and David Matthau, son of the film’s star. Hop over the unwatchable “Hopscotch” when considering what films to watch over the weekend. It flopped at the box office for AVCO Embassy Pictures.
