My Review

“When Time Ran Out…” is a disaster movie about a volcano threatening to erupt on a beautiful South Pacific island that houses a resort for the rich and famous. Most of them ignore the danger, but a few attempt a risky escape. This film was indeed a disaster, featuring a bad script, a plot with more holes than a Swiss cheese, and terrible special effects, especially the fake volcano. Producer Irwin Allen (“The Poseidon Adventure” 1972) really fell down on the job in his final big screen project. Director James Goldstone (“Rollercoaster” 1977) must have had a terrible time handling the monstrosity of a screenplay by Carl Foreman and Stirling Silliphant.

There is certainly no shortage of star power. Paul Newman and William Holden were reunited from Allen’s “The Towering Inferno” (1974). Ernest Borgnine and Red Buttons were also together a second time after their appearance in “The Poseidon Adventure” (1972). Jacqueline Bisset, James Franciscus, and Edward Albert were also cast members in “The Greek Tycoon” (1978). Others include Burgess Meredith, Barbara Carrera, Veronica Hamel, Alex Karras, Pat Morita, Valentina Cortese, John Considine, Sheila Allen, Lonny Chapman, and Sandy Kenyon.

Some of the actors made a hazardous trek across the island, which was a copy of the plot from another volcano picture, 1961’s “The Devil at 4 O’Clock” starring Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra. Just one of many scenes where Irwin Allen’s team ran out of ideas for the big screen debacle “When Time Ran Out…” Time was also out for this genre of movies, as this was Hollywood’s final disaster film of the 1970’s. It was also a disaster at the box office for producer Irwin Allen and Warner Bros. Pictures.
