James Bond is dispatched on a secret mission in “For Your Eyes Only” to recover a missing communications system before it falls into the hands of the Russians; it is crucial in controlling the UK’s nuclear submarines. All the drama and action proceeds from there, well directed by John Glen (“Moonraker” 1979) from a tight screenplay by Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson.
Roger Moore continues to bring his dry humor to his fifth role as the MI6 agent 007. His handling of puns fits well into the film series, with “For Your Eyes Only” being number twelve overall. Co-stars include Carole Bouquet, Chaim Topol, Lynn-Holly Johnson, Julian Glover, Cassandra Harris, Michael Gothard, Jill Bennett, Jack Hedley, James Villiers, John Moreno, John Wyman, and Janet Brown and John Wells as Margaret and Denis Thatcher. Returnees include Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny, Desmond Llewelyn as Q, Geoffrey Keen as the Minister of Defense, and Walter Gotell as head of the KGB.
The very watchable “For Your Eyes Only” was a smashing success in theatrical release for producer Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli, Eon Entertainment, and United Artists. It was filmed in the United Kingdom, Greece, Italy, and in the North Sea. At the Academy Awards ceremony, Cubby Broccoli was awarded a special Oscar, the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award. There was one other Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song – “For Your Eyes Only” (Bill Conti and Mark Leeson).
