My Review

Lily Tomlin plays a suburban housewife who begins to shrink after exposure to an experimental perfume in “The Incredible Shrinking Woman.” Director Joel Schumacher (in his big screen debut) and screenwriter Jane Wagner do quite well in creating this spoof and comedy version of the 1957 science fiction film “The Incredible Shrinking Man.”

The talented supporting cast behind Tomlin help out in the laughter department, including Charles Grodin, Ned Beatty, Henry Gibson, John Glover, Sally Kirkland, Elizabeth Wilson, Mark Blankfield, Rich Baker, Pamela Bellwood, Jim McMullan, and talk show host Mike Douglas as himself. Dick Wilson plays a finicky supermarket manager, similar to his most famous role as Mr. Whipple of the Charmin tissue television commercial fame (“Don’t squeeze the Charmin!”). Gibson and Tomlin are reunited cast members of “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” (1968-1973).

Fun escapist programming and watchable entertainment await in “The Incredible Shrinking Woman,” successful at the box office for Universal Pictures.
