“The Man of Destiny” is the fictional story of a young Napoleon Bonaparte arriving at an inn in Italy on the verge of one of his great victories. This made-for-television movie was well directed by Desmond Davis from one of George Bernard Shaw’s least known plays; the text from the play was used word-for-word for the film.
The small cast delivered good performances in the one hour broadcast, including Simon Callow as the diminutive dictator, Niall Toibin as the innkeeper, Delphine Seyrig as the mysterious and beautiful woman, and David Troughton as the lieutenant bringing Napoleon letters in the mail consequential to the plot. (Troughton is the son of the second Dr. Who, Patrick Troughton.) The watchable “The Man of Destiny” was first broadcast on the BBC on May 5, 1981, in the United Kingdom.
