My Review

“Pennies from Heaven” is a romantic comedy is about a sheet-music salesman in the 1930’s whose business is failing and his marriage is not doing very well either. Director Herbert Ross (“California Suite” 1978) put together a flat and dull story with a poorly written screenplay by Dennis Potter and lackluster performances from the actors.

The cast includes Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Jessica Harper, Christopher Walken, John McMartin, Vernel Bagneris, John Karlen, Jay Garner, Tommy Hall, Nancy Parsons, Duke Stroud, Will Hare, and Francis X. McCarthy as the bartender.

One positive aspect of the film is the musical numbers written by Marvin Hamlisch, Ralph Burns, Con Conrad, and Billy May. It was choreographed by Danny Daniels with great cinematography by Gordon Willis. “Pennies from Heaven,” a movie not worth spending a dime to watch, was a big flop at the box office for United Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
