Executive producer Steven Spielberg had another one of his megahits with the dark comedy horror film “Gremlins.” The story is about a young man who receives a gift of a small cuddly creature called a mogwai, which then spawns offspring which cause trouble and get into all sorts of mischief.
Complaints about violence in this picture (and some others like “Indiana Jones,” also released in 1984) led to the Motion Picture Association of America to create the PG13 rating. Despite this, “Gremlins” was a big hit at the box office for Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, and deservedly so, being a film that is well paced, well written, and very humorous and entertaining. Kudos to director Joe Dante (“Piranha” 1978) and to screenwriter Chris Columbus for a job well done!
The cast includes youngsters Zach Galligan (film debut) and Phoebe Cates in the lead roles, with co-stars Hoyt Axton, Polly Holiday, Judge Reinhold, Dick Miller, Glynn Turman, Frances Lee McCain, Scott Brady, Corey Feldman, Jonathan Banks, Edward Andrews, Jackie Joseph, Belinda Balaski, and veteran actors John C. Becher, Harry Carey Jr., and Keye Luke, a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.
