“The Ice Pirates” is a science fiction comedy film telling the story of a future where water is a rare commodity, with pirates dealing ice on the intergalactic black market. Director Stewart Raffill (“Across the Great Divide” 1976), who co-wrote the screenplay with Stanford Sherman, provides some laughs in a well-paced 91 minutes. The movie does a good job spoofing pictures like “Star Wars,” “Alien,” and other films of the genre.
The cast is headed by Robert Urich (Dan Tanna of “Vegas” 1978-1981) and Mary Crosby (Kristen Shepard of “Dallas” 1979-1981), who do a capable job in the acting department. Others include Angelica Huston, Michael B. Roberts, Ron Perlman, Ian Abercrombie, Bruce Vilanch, John Matuszak, Alan Caillou, Natalie Core, Marcia Lewis, and John Carradine in one of his final film roles in a career that began in 1930.
While obviously not Shakespeare, “The Ice Pirates” is fun and watchable escapist programming, modestly successful at the box office for JF Productions and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
