My Review

“The Company You Keep” is a story where Robert Redford plays a man who has been hiding from the FBI for over thirty years, due to his activities as a Weather Underground operative and anti-Vietnam War militant in the 1960’s and 1970’s. He goes on the run when he is exposed by a young journalist. Producer-director Redford and screenwriter Lem Dobbs adapted the screenplay from the 2013 novel of the same name by Neil Gordon.

Redford and the cast do capable jobs in the performance department, but the story itself is long and drawn out, and tends to bore the audience. It also seems to romanticize the violent activities of what amounts to domestic terrorism. Co-stars include Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Jackie Evancho, Brendan Gleeson, Brit Marling, Anna Kendrick, Terrance Howard, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Sam Elliot, Stephen Root, Stanley Tucci, and Keegan Connor Tracy as Bob Redford’s secretary.

The unwatchable “The Company You Keep” was barely profitable at the box office for producer Robert Redford, Voltage Pictures, and Sony Pictures Classics.
