My Review

“Jojo Rabbit” is a war comedy-drama film that tells the story of a ten year old boy in Nazi Germany in World War II who is active in the Hitler Youth program. When he finds out that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in the attic, he has a crisis of conscience about his beliefs, which are supported by an imaginary friend, a fanciful version of Adolph Hitler. Director-screenwriter Taika Waititi (“Thor: Ragnarok” 2017) does quite a skillful job of blending comedy and drama dealing with very sensitive subject that translates well into motion picture form. It was adapted from the 2008 novel “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunens.

The cast delivers some very extraordinary performances: Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo Betzier, Scarlett Johannsen as his mother Rosie Betzier, Thomasin McKenzie as the Jewish girl, Taika Waititi as the imaginary Hitler, as well as Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, Archie Yates, Gabriel Andrews, Robert East, Victoria Hogan, and Luke Brandon Field.

The watchable “Jojo Rabbit” was successful at the box office for producer Taika Waititi, Piki Films, Defender Films, TSG Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight Pictures. It won one Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for Waititi, with five other nominations: Best Picture, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, and Best Supporting Actress for Johannsen.
