“Meg 2: The Trench” is an action-adventure movie about a group of scientists whose explorations of the deepest part of the ocean are interrupted by some giant sea creatures. They must escape by walking along the floor of the sea! Director Ben Wheatley (“Rebecca” 2020) put together this sequel of 2018’s “The Meg” about as well as anyone could, from a predictable but action-filled screenplay by Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber, and Dean Georgaris. It is based on the 1999 novel “The Trench” by Steve Alten.
The cast seemed to tread water for nearly two hours, which includes Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, Melissanthi Mahut, Whoopie Van Raam, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Felix Mayr, Sienna Guillory, and Cliff Curtis of “Whale Rider” (2002) fame.
The crowd-pleaser “Meg 2: The Trench” was successful in theatrical release for China Media Capital Pictures, DF Pictures, di Bonaventura Pictures, Apelles Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was nominated for three Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Jason Statham), and Worst Director (Ben Wheatley).
