My Review

“My Stepmother Is an Alien” is out-of-this-world escapist entertainment from director Richard Benjamin (“The Money Pit” 1986). Kim Basinger plays an alien who is sent to Earth to deal with disruption of her planet’s gravity, caused by a scientist’s experiments with radio waves sent into deep space. The scientist is played by Dan Aykroyd.

Director Benjamin and screenwriters Jerico Stone, Timothy Harris, Herschel Weingrod, and Jonathan Reynolds give good material for Aykroyd and Basinger to work with. There are plenty of laughs throughout the 105 minute film, which admittedly is formulaic and predictable.

Co-stars include Jon Lovitz, Alyson Hannigan, Joseph Maher, Wesley Mann, Tony Jay, Peter Bromilow, Harry Shearer, Juliette Lewis (in her motion picture debut), a very young Seth Green, and Ann Prentiss (Mrs. Richard Benjamin) as the Voice of the Bag. The watchable “My Stepmother Is an Alien” was not very successful in theatrical release for the Weintraub Entertainment Group and Columbia Pictures.
