Burt Reynolds delivers a surprisingly nuanced performance as a recently divorced man who is unable to decide between his new girl friend and his former wife in “Starting Over.” Expert direction by Alan J. Pakula (“All the President’s Men” 1976) and crystal clear writing by James L. Brooks helped Reynolds and the rest of the cast in doing an excellent job.
Other cast members include Candice Bergen, Jill Clayburgh, Charles Durning, Francis Sternhagen, Mary Kay Place, Austin Pendleton, Jay D. Sanders, Daniel Stern, and Kevin Bacon in a deleted scene that can be viewed on the dvd. Bergen was especially funny in scenes where she sang in a most uninhibited fashion. Bergen and Clayburgh were both nominated for Oscars. (Who could choose between the two?)
The watchable “Starting Over” was a hit at the box office for Paramount Pictures and producers Alan Pakula and James Brooks.
