Science fiction goes under the deep blue sea in “The Abyss.” James Cameron (“The Terminator” 1984) directed and wrote the screenplay about the story of a SEAL team sent to rescue a U. S. nuclear submarine that sank in the Cayman Trough in the Caribbean Sea. The 140-minute movie goes by very quickly, with surprises around every corner. Pre-“Titanic” Cameron seems to be at the top of his game here.
His cast members also rise (or sink) to the occasion with good performances. They include Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Michael Biehn, J. C. Quinn, Leo Burmester, Kimberly Scott, Todd Graff, John Bedford Lloyd, Chris Elliot, Ken Jenkins, Richard Warlock, William Wisher Jr., and J. Kenneth Campbell.
“The Abyss” was successful in theatrical release for producer Gale Anne Hurd and 20th Century Fox. It won one Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, with nominations for Best Art Direction, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography. The extended version on DVD is a must-see at nearly three hours in length.
