My Review

“Gods of Egypt” is a fantasy action-adventure film based on ancient Egyptian deities, with the story centering on conflicts and battles between two “divine” brothers and their friends and relatives. Australian producer-director Alex Proyas (“I, Robot” 2004) filled this movie with a large amount of action sequences and special effects that covers up a predictable plot and storyline, from a passable screenplay written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Cast members turn in acceptable performances, with Gerard Butler and Bryan Brown as the two brothers, Geoffrey Rush as their father, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Butler’s son. Other actors include Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Elodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, Rufus Sewell, Rachel Blake, Emma Booth, and Lindsay Ferris. The nine major Egyptian “gods” were portrayed in the motion picture.

Filming took place in Australia, with fantastic cinematography and special effects supervised by Peter Menzies Jr. Proyas and Menzies used “forced perspective” and “motion control photography” to portray the difference in height between the actors portraying the gods and the humans.

The watchable “Gods of Egypt” underperformed at the box office, and, with the expensive budget and the subsequent advertising expenses, caused the film to break even, much to the chagrin of producer Alex Proyas, Summit Entertainment, Mystery Clock Cinema, Thunder Road Films, Entertainment One, and Lionsgate Films. It was nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards: Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Actor (Butler), and Worst Screen Combo (any two Egyptian gods or mortals).
