My Review

Three friends in New York City decide to take a different kind of vacation and get away from it all at a dude ranch in New Mexico, where they will go on a cattle drive to Colorado. The comedy, and some drama, proceeds from there in “City Slickers.” Billy Crystal, Bruno Kirby, and Daniel Stern deliver the laughs in this western comedy directed by Ron Underwood (“Tremors” 1990) and well written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandell.

Veteran actor Jack Palance made something of a comeback in his long movie career as trail boss Curly Washburn. He develops quite a relationship with the three city slickers from New York. Palance won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and caused quite a stir when he did a one-armed pushup at the Academy Awards ceremony. His first movie appearance was in 1950’s “Panic in the Streets” from director Elia Kazan.

Co-stars include Patricia Wettig, Helen Slater, Noble Willingham, Tracey Walter, Jeffrey Tambor, David Paymer, Josh Mostel, Bill Henderson, Phil Lewis, Kyle Secor, Yeardley Smith, Karla Tamburrelli, Robert Costanzo, Molly McClure, Danielle Harris, and Jake Gyllenhaal in his first motion picture role. Veteran Jayne Meadows had a voice role as Billy Crystal’s mother. Meadows made her big screen debut in 1946.

The watchable and fun “City Slickers” was very successful in theatrical release for Castle Rock Entertainment, Face Productions, Nelson Entertainment, and Columbia Pictures.
