My Review

“Dolly Parton’s Christmas on Square” is a holiday musical film about a wealthy woman who announces that she will be evicting the residents of a town by selling the land to a mall developer. The announcement sends the town folk into an uproar, in a story that is reminiscent of Charles Dickins’ “A Christmas Carol.” Director and choreographer Debbie Allen did a fantastic job orchestrating the made-for-television film from the teleplay by Maria S. Schlatter and the music composed by Dolly Parton. Schlatter adapted the teleplay from her own stage play.

The cast includes Christine Baranski as the town’s owner, Dolly Parton as the Angel, Josh Segarra as the church pastor, Jenifer Lewis, Jeanine Mason, Mary Lane Haskell, Brandon Hudson, and Treat Williams in one of his last movie appearances before his death in 2023, a career that began in 1975.

The very watchable movie “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” was released on Netflix in November, 2020, for executive producers Debbie Allen and Dolly Parton, Magnolia Hill Productions, and Warner Bros. Television. It won two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Program.
