My Review

Producer-director Robert Redford (“Ordinary People” 1980) created a fine drama called “A River Runs Through It,” the story of two sons of a Presbyterian minister set in the era between the two world wars (1918-1941).

This motion picture seems to have everything: A marvelous screenplay by Richard Friedenberg, adapted from a 1976 novel by Norman Maclean, and a beautiful original musical score by Mark Isham. Both were nominated for Oscars, with one Academy Award win for this movie for the stunning cinematography by Philippe Rousselot, filmed on location in photogenic Montana.

The actors are equally impressive. Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt deliver good performances as the brothers who choose different paths in life. This was Pitt’s second major film (after “Thelma and Louise” in 1991), solidifying his position as a major star. Tom Skerritt and Branda Blethyn fit the bill as the Reverend and Mrs. Maclean. The supporting cast includes Emily Lloyd, Edie McClurg, Vann Gravage, Stephen Shellen, and a young Joseph Gordon-Levitt in his feature film debut. Robert Redford did the honors as narrator.

“A River Runs Through It” was a big success at the box office for producer Robert Redford and Columbia Pictures.
