“What’s Love Got to Do with It” is a love story about a British filmmaker who documents the efforts of her Pakistani friend to find a wife in the “arranged-marriage” system of Pakistan’s Muslim society. She gets more than she bargained for when feelings between the two start to develop. Indian director Shekhar Kapur does a good job in developing a complicated love story with good production values, although the storyline is a bit uneven and even boring in parts. The screenplay was penned by Jemina Khan, an Englishwoman who seems to have written in some of her own life experiences into the picture.
The cast includes Lily James, Shazad Latif, Shabana Azmi, Emma Thompson, Sajal Ali, Oliver Chris, Asim Chaudhry, Jeff Mirza, Alice Orr-Ewing, Sindhu Vee, Shahid Khan (aka Naughty Boy), and Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan as himself. “What’s Love Got to Do with It” was not very successful at the box office for producer Jemina Khan, Instinct Productions, Working Title Films, and StudioCanal Ltd.
