“Dumb and Dumber” accurately describes this buddy comedy film from director Peter Farrelly in his motion picture debut. The story has two well meaning and not so bright friends on a road trip from Providence, Rhode Island, to Aspen, Colorado, delivering a briefcase full of cash to its owner, thinking it was mistakenly abandoned but is actually a ransom.
The screenplay by Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly, and Bennett Yellin relies heavily upon crude slapstick humor and very stupid sight gags. The performances by the two principals, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, are predictably dumb and obnoxious, with the film developing a cult following over the years, largely based on said offerings. Co-stars include Lauren Holly, Teri Garr, Karen Duffy, Mike Starr, Charles Rocket, Felton Perry, Harland Williams, Victoria Rowell, Cam Neely, Hank Brandt, Brady Bluhm, and veteran actress Connie Sawyer, who had a small part as a elderly lady on a motorized cart. Her movie career began in 1959 in “A Hole in the Head” with Frank Sinatra, going all the way to her final role in “Lovesick” in 2014.
The somehow watchable “Dumb and Dumber” is so bad that it actually draws viewers into the story, like watching a slow-motion train wreck. It was a big hit at the box office for Katja Motion Picture Corporation, Krevoy/Stabler/Wessler Productions, and New Line Cinema.
Jim Carrey was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst New Actor for his role in “Dumb and Dumber.” In 2003, a prequel was released called “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.” A sequel came out in 2014: “Dumb and Dumber To.”
