“Casino” is an epic crime drama about two Mafia mobsters competing in the world of 1970’s Las Vegas, with cash and criminal activity galore. Director Martin Scorsese (“New York, New York” 1977) created quite a film with non-stop activity, action, romance, and drama that makes the movie’s three hours seem shorter. He wrote the engrossing screenplay with Nicolas Pileggi. It was adapted from Pileggi’s 1995 book “Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.”
Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Sharon Stone are the three principal stars of the show, delivering riveting performances. This was De Niro’s eight movie with Scorsese, out of eleven, so far. Martin Scorsese’s unusual epic features three people with messy and chaotic lives that do not fit into the regular story arc. This and the alternate narrations by De Niro and Pesci contributes to an air of unpredictability about “Casino” that leaves the viewers wondering what will happen next. Sharon Stone’s wild performance earned the picture its only Oscar nomination, for Best Actress.
The stellar supporting cast includes Don Rickles, Kevin Pollack, James Woods, Alan King, Frank Vincent, L. Q. Jones, Bill Allison, Pasquale Cajano, Vinny Vella, Richard Riehle, Catherine Scorsese (the director’s mother), and Dick Smothers as Senator Harrison Roberts. Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows, Jerry Vale, and Frankie Avalon appear in cameos as themselves. “Casino” was a hit at the box office for Legende Enterprises, De Fina/Cappa, and Universal Pictures.
