Pierce Brosnan makes his debut as James Bond in “GoldenEye,” a big hit with movie-goers and critics alike. In a post-Cold War and post-Soviet Union, the story has James trying to prevent a rogue MI6 agent from using a satellite weapon against London to cause a global economic meltdown. Director Martin Campbell (“No Escape” 1994) and screenwriters Jeffrey Caine and Bruce Feirstein have put together an exciting two hour-plus movie with all of the usual Bond action and adventure.
New producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael J. Wilson have taken over from their father & step-father, respectively, Albert M. “Cubby” Broccoli, as the heads of Eon Productions for the seventeenth Bond picture. Joining Brosnan in the cast are Judy Dench as M and Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny. Desomond Llewelyn makes his sixteenth appearance as gadget chief Q.
The supporting cast includes Sean Bean, Izabella Scorupco, Famke Janssen, Joe Don Baker, Minnie Driver, Alan Cumming, Michael Kitchen, Serena Gordon, Gottfried John, Robbie Coltrane, and Tcheky Karyo. Eric Serra composed the soundtrack, and the theme song was performed by Tina Turner and written by Bono and The Edge of U2. “GoldenEye” was a big hit at the box office for Eon Productions, United Artists, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/United Artists Distribution Company.
