My Review

“Othello” is a fine film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic 1603 play about a Moorish general in the military of the Republic of Venice who is the victim of plots by his friend Iago, jealous of his success and marriage to a Venetian beauty. Director-screenwriter Oliver Parker did quite well in his big screen debut.

The dialogue seems to follow Shakespeare’s words exactly, although omitting some of the original material. The performances by Laurence Fishburne as Othello and Kenneth Branagh as Iago are nothing less than spectacular. The supporting cast includes Irene Jacob, Nathaniel Parker, Michael Maloney, Anna Patrick, Nicholas Farrell, Indra Ove, and Michael Sheen.

Bill Shakespeare’s very watchable “Othello” was not successful in theatrical release for Columbia Pictures, Castle Rock Entertainment, Dakota Films, Imminent Films, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
