“The Usual Suspects” is a crime drama film from producer-director Bryan Singer (“Public Access” 1993) telling the story of five men who, after appearing together in a police lineup, agree to pull off a heist. Unfortunately, the plot that appears to have potential falls flat on its face due to sloppy directing and a badly written screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie. The movie is difficult to follow, with labored dialogue and ambiguous characters.
Amazingly, the film won two Oscars, one for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Kevin Spacey. He is one of the five lead actors, which includes Kevin Pollack, Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, and Chaz Palminteri. Others involved are Benicio del Toro, Pete Postlethwaite, Suzy Amis, Giancarlo Esposito, Dan Hedaya.
The quality of “The Usual Suspects” is indeed suspect, and would be a crime to spend two hours watching this turkey. However, it did have success at the box office for PolyGram Film Entertainment, Bad Hat Harry Films, Blue Parrot Productions, Spelling Films International, Gramercy Pictures, and Columbia TriStar Film Distributors International.
